Preserving the Past with Surayt-Aramaic
Surayt-Aramaic by Freie Universitaet Berlin is an innovative tool that bridges the gap between ancient language and modern technology, making Aramaic accessible for learners today.
Surayt (also known as Turoyo) is a Neo-Aramaic language traditionally spoken by Syriac Christians, also known as Arameans and Assyrians, in various countries across the Middle East. Currently, it is spoken by approximately 250,000 individuals globally. Surayt has been classified as 'severely endangered' by UNESCO due to the emigration or expulsion of its speakers from their native regions over the last six decades. One of the initiatives aimed at revitalizing this language is the Surayt app, which has been developed through the EC-funded Erasmus+ Surayt-Aramaic Online Project (2017-2020), coordinated by Freie Universität Berlin.
The Surayt app, an open-source platform, serves as a supplementary educational tool aligned with the A-B-C levels outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For enhanced learning outcomes, users are encouraged to utilize the application alongside the digital learning platform and corpus accessible on the project's website (www.surayt.com).
Available in seven languages of instruction (English, German, Swedish, French, Dutch, Arabic, and Turkish), the Surayt app encompasses texts, dialogues, exercises, grammatical explanations, cultural insights, and vocabulary resources. Each written component is accompanied by audio materials narrated by both male and female voices.
Developer: Dr. Robert Turnbull on behalf of the Beth Mardutho Institute, a project partner in the Erasmus+ Surayt-Aramaic Online Project.
